It can be tough to stay motivated.

The never-ending chase of bringing the money in. The constant cajoling of clients to respond to your emails. The nagging one has to do to suppliers just to get some decent service. And, the shock of high taxes when all you seem to do is pay out money each month.

Sounds dismal, doesn’t it?

Staying motivated is a full time job!

But motivated we must stay. Because, if we let all of little life’s moments bring us down, then we will struggle to get up from them, and not getting up isn’t an option in today’s dog-eat-dog world.

Start your day with a positive mantra

Okay, move over Ellen DeGeneres! Shift up Dr. Phil! Yes, it may sound a little cliché but beginning your day with a positive thought can really make all the difference. You don’t need to stand in front of the mirror and recite it like a mental parrot, but just deciding to find something to feel good about and bringing it up from the start and during your day, will help you see the glass half full in all moments.

Power Pose yourself through situations

You may have heard that body language is important when it comes to communicating with others. But, body language is also essential when connecting with yourself.

So, get ready to “strike a pose” when feeling negative or potentially walking into a difficult situation.

A few power poses that work and can make you feel more confident and positive:

1. Standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, hands on hips

2. Leaning forward onto a table, hands splayed in front of you

And, remember to smile. Power poses can come across as aggressive or arrogant. That is not what you want to communicate. You want to be in a place of quiet confident power.

Eat Positive Food

Oh, yes! Eating certain foods high in dopamine can help you to approach things more positively.

Foods that fit the bill are:

Chocolate
Fish
Nuts
Seeds
Avocado
Raw Carrots
Blueberries

Seek solace in color

Not every color, mind you.

The colors that will help you the most when in need of positive input are – Green, Yellow, and Orange.

Engage in activities that bring a smile to your face

We all often have to do things that we don’t particularly like to do but have to. When you’re feeling low and demotivated, take a breather and do something that you love and are passionate about.

That may be reading. It may be driving your car, visiting a friend, getting creative, or relaxing and doing nothing.

Sometimes, being around positive people can pull you out of your doldrums.

Say Thank You

Taking the focus away from yourself and thinking about what you should be grateful for can do the trick. Most times, it is never as bad as you think.

Write down all those things that you are thankful for, and if possible, go thank that person, or simply acknowledge how lucky and privileged you are.
